2013 Spring Initiation

Kappa Delta Pi has been organized to recognize scholarship and excellence in education. Those individuals elected to membership exhibit the ideals of scholarship, high personal standards, and promise in the teaching and allied professions recognized by the Society. An invitation is extended to undergraduates who have obtained an overall grade point average of 3.25 or above, and who have completed 60 units in a preteaching/subject area degree.



The initiation ceremony for new members will be held on Friday, May 17, at 5:00 p.m., in the Arts and Science Building, Wiegand Room 102. You must participate in the ceremony to become a member.

A fee of $54.00 will need to be collected before your application will be complete. Please use your debit or credit card online or bring a check to Varsi Hall 2nd floor, payable to Liberal Studies by May 8th.

Information presented will be applicable to graduate programs nationwide. This one-day conference will take place on Saturday, April 20^th, 2013 on the beautiful and historic campus of Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California.

The conference will feature experts in the fields of Teacher Education and Preparation; Professional Therapy, Counseling, and Psychology; and Graduate Admissions. Presenters will be candid, upfront, and entertaining as they provide practical tips and insight into becoming a successful graduate school applicant and student. The day will conclude with an outdoor reception and allow for an invaluable opportunity to interact with other conference attendees.

After attending this conference, you will be able to:

·       Align your personal values, interests, and skills with your graduate school   goals

·       Recognize the essential components of the graduate school application and process

·       Analyze and improve your online persona

·       Evaluate the characteristics of a competitive graduate school candidate

The KDP leaders are planning on holding this year's Spring initiation ceremony sometime in April-May. We will also be introducing your new KDP President and Vice President for the 2013-2014 school year!

Dear KDP Members,

It's still not too late to participate in this year's Literacy Alive! event. The event will be ending this week on Friday, March 8th. My goal is to have at least 6 more members to participate so that we can have a total of 10 participants. Thanks a lot to the following four members:

1. Kiera Lloyd has read Olivia by Ian Falconer to her class and the other third grade classes in her school.

2. June Mazon will be reading Oh the Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss this week to the class of fifth graders she is student-teaching.

3. Imelda Kusuma will be reading to her class this Thursday.

4. I have read The Lorax by Dr. Seuss to my transitional kindergarten class!

KDP Literacy Alive! Event Extended

This year, you will get to share the joy of reading with students in the classroom you are working in or the group of children you are working with. Pick a day and time that works for you and pick up your favorite book to read! This event will be held from Monday, February 25th to Friday, March 8th. 

Pledge to read and inspire today!

Like every year, we will be holding our annual Literacy Alive! event to spread the love of reading and inspire students to read. I have tried to make this year's event as flexible as possible so that all members can participate. Below is the information on this year's event:

Event Date: February 25th - March 1st (Dr. Seuss Week) You will pick a day and time that suits your schedule sometime during this week.

Event Description:
Kappa Delta Pi members will pledge to read to students in schools they are volunteering, student-teaching, or teaching in. (A pledge is simply emailing me whether you are willing to make this commitment.)  On the day of the event, members will read a book that speaks to them and makes profound connections to students’ lives. Members will use the book and engage students in an activity/discussion to find commonalities and connections between themselves and others.

After you finish this lesson, email me (pgill@scu.edu) the title of the book you read and a short description of your activity.
